Blocked kick seals win for Miller Grove

Kameron Williams

The Miller Grove Wolverines got their third win of the season after beating Lakeside 18-16 Sept. 15 at Avondale Stadium.

The Wolverines’ defense made the play of the game. With less than two minutes on the clock, Lakeside’s offense picked up few first down to reach the 11-yard line. With less than 15 seconds remaining on the clock, the Lakeside Vikings sent in kicker Matthew Franklin to hopefully kick a 21-yard field goal to win the game.

However, Miller Grove’s defense blocked Franklin’s kick to seal the victory for the Wolverines.

In the first quarter, Franklin kicked a field goal to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. Miller Grove took the lead on the following drive on a six-yard run by Charlie Cooper, giving the Wolverines a 3 point lead. The extra point was missed.

Lakeside regained the lead (10-6) later in the first quarter with a 43-yard run by Max Guggemos. Miller Grove went up 12-10 in the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from Shawn Collins to Kameron Williams.

Collins found Williams again in the third quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass, giving Miller Grove an 18-10 lead. Lakeside cut the Wolverines’ lead to 18-16 early in the fourth quarter after Demonte Pressley intercepted Collins’ pass and returned it for a touchdown.
