A mother and her boyfriend were charged with murder in the death of an 8-month-old baby.
Shavone Whitehead and Edward Wilson have been in the DeKalb County jail since Aug. 2, a day before 8-month-old Kamonine Whitehead, who was not breathing and had visible bruises, was taken to Egleston Children’s Hospital. The baby died Aug. 13.
Along with the murder charges, Whitehead and Wilson were charged with first degree cruelty to children and aggravated battery.
According to the arrest warrant, on Aug. 1, a Brookhaven officer responded to a call to the home and discovered Kamonine not breathing. The officer also saw bruises on the baby’s legs and buttocks.
The baby was transported to the hospital and died 12 days later, “as a result of the care and abuse given to her” by Wilson and Whitehead, according to the warrant. After an autopsy was performed, the DeKalb Medical Examiner Office ruled the death a homicide due to traumatic brain injury caused by “acceleration and deceleration” of the baby’s head, according to the warrant.
The medical examiner also said Kamonine had several broken ribs.
Whitehead and Wilson were each given a $15,000 bond.
