More than 300 stood in line for hours to receive a free turkey when DeKalb County’s Women In NAACP and DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson hosted a turkey giveaway on Nov. 23 to help needy families for Thanksgiving.

“It’s all about serving the community,” Johnson said.

With financial and physical help from sponsors such as HUGLIFE, turkeys were distributed to the first 300 people at The Gallery at South DeKalb Mall. Those in the front of the line said they had been there since 5:30 a.m.

“We’re here doing the Lord’s work and trying to do the best we can to help people,” said John Evans, president DeKalb NAACP.

Streetz 94.5 FM radio was on-site doing a live remote broadcast during the giveaway.
