A 25-year-old man is in the DeKalb County jail and charged with murder after police said he beat his 5-year-old son to death with a shovel and buried him in the back yard.
Montrais Boyd was booked into DeKalb County Jail Feb. 22. Shiera Campbell of the DeKalb Police Department said police arrived at the home on Rocky Pine Drive in Lithonia around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and saw the mother of the 5-year-old boy, who had the child in the back seat of the car.
“She was attempting to take the child to the hospital, but the child was already dead,” Campbell said.
Before the alleged murder occurred, the mother and the grandmother were running errands and left the child home with Boyd, along with three other children who are siblings of the suspect.
“When the mother and grandmother returned to the house they discovered the crime scene,” Campbell said. “The children that were in the house said that Montrais had killed the 5-year-old.”
Campbell said the mother and grandmother learned that Boyd had beaten the child with a shovel and n the process had partially decapitated the child’s head.
“The grandmother told the children to run and the children left the house,” Campbell said. “The grandmother called 9-1-1. The mother proceeded to look for her child and discovered that the child had been buried in the back yard. She was able to remove the child from the ground and that’s when she attempted to take the child to the hospital.”
Police do not know why Boyd allegedly beat the child. The other children in the home were not injured.
