SWD names interim football coach

SWD football helmetFletcher Salter has been appointed interim coach for the Southwest DeKalb High School football team following the death of head coach Michael Tanks, the DeKalb County School District announced Aug. 12.

Salter, who coached under Tanks and former head coach Buck Godfrey, is a retired educator.

Salter is a graduate of Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala., and received degrees from Alabama State University and Cambridge University.  He has taught at five schools in DeKalb and has coached basketball, baseball and football at various schools in the county.

“Coach Salter will provide excellent leadership for the Southwest DeKalb football program as we enter into this season,” Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green said in a released statement. “We will be seeking a new coach in January, 2017.” 

Tanks died Aug. 3 of complications related to a stroke he suffered at his home.

“Coach Tanks, a former student, was a valuable part of the faculty and staff,” Southwest DeKalb Principal Dr. Thomas Glanton said. “His passing has devastated our school community and he will be missed.”
