Tucker advances in state tennis playoffs

DSCN2801

The Tucker Tigers tennis teams had the brooms out literally and figuratively for their first-round playoff match.

Both the boys and girls’ teams swept Brunswick 5-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs April 17 at Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center. Before Tucker swept Brunswick, event officials had to sweep the courts dry following a rain delay.

On the boys’ side, junior Shawn Lunde (No. 1 singles), sophomore Usman Jamal (No. 2 singles) and Malik Shakir (No. 3 singles) all won their individual matches. Junior Revaz Sharma and freshman Carter Foley won the No. 1 doubles match, while seniors Bryce Brechin and Adonis Jett won the No. 2 doubles, completing the sweep.

The Tigers’ win improved their record to 13-2 on the season. Tucker will face Creekview in the second  playoff round.

The Lady Tigers also improved to 13-2 on the season after their first-round win. Junior Daelyn Turner (No. 1), senior Ryan Vaughters (No. 2) and sophomore Jade Warupa (No. 3) won their singles matchups. Juniors Kelsey Hayes and Sarah Penkava won the No. 1 doubles match and seniors Cydnie Cole and N’yema Holloway won the No. 2 doubles match.

The Lady Tigers will face the winner of the Dacula vs. Creekview matchup in the second playoff round.
