State board recommends removal of six DeKalb school board members

After a marathon hearing, Georgia’s Board of Education (GBOE) decided that six members of the DeKalb school board need to go.

GBOE voted, after a 14-hour hearing on Feb. 21, to recommend to Gov. Nathan Deal to remove DeKalb board members Sarah Copelin-Wood, Jesse “Jay” Cunningham, Donna Elder, Nancy Jester, Pamela A. Speaks and Eugene P. Walker.

Only the newly elected board members, Dr. Melvin Johnson, Jim McMahan and Marshall D. Orson, would remain if Deal accepts GBOE’s recommendation.

In a statement after GBOE’s decision, Rep. Mike Jacobs said, “I think I can safely speak for all DeKalb County parents when I say: Thank goodness.

“The matter now goes to Governor Deal for a final decision,” Jacobs said. “Hopefully, after that, the focus can return to our kids.”
