Arrests made in alleged child abuse case at local day care

DeKalb County Police Department announced July 20 the arrest of three individuals who police said are connected to alleged child abuse at Appletree Learning Center and Academy located at 4700 E. Ponce De Leon Avenue in Stone Mountain.

DeKalb police said a recent investigation into alleged child abuse at the day care facility led to the arrests of three female employees. Police did not provide additional information at press time.

However, DeKalb County Police Department officials asked anyone who thinks a child may have been a victim and anyone who has information that may help in this investigation, to contact the DeKalb County Special Victims Unit at (770) 724-7710.

DeKalb police announced the investigation on July 13.

According to the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), Appletree Learning Center and Academy is a pre-k provider that serves children 5 years old and younger. DECAL’s website states that Appletree Learning Center and Academy has a licensed capacity of 80 students.

The early learning center also has a one-star rating in DECAL’s voluntary Quality Rated program, a program that evaluates childcare facilities to determine whether they meet or exceed state requirements. 

The facility does not have a webcam for parents or surveillance videos, according to DECAL’s website.
