Atlanta elects Dickens as mayor; two new city council members elected in Stonecrest, Tucker

The city of Atlanta has a new mayor-elect and two cities in DeKalb County have newly elected city council members after the Nov. 30 runoff election.

Atlanta City Council Member Andre Dickens, who trailed behind Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore in the Nov. 2 General Election, gained more than 63 percent of the total votes cast in the runoff election. “The future of Atlanta is limitless. I am humbled that you chose me to serve as the 61st Mayor of Atlanta,” stated Dickens.

Both candidates put addressing Atlanta’s crime wave at the top of their list of priorities and pledged to unite a city torn by a push to create a separate city in Buckhead.

“This city needed a unifier, somebody that could bring this whole city together,” Dickens told supporters in his victory speech.

The cities of Stonecrest and Tucker will welcome new city council members. In Stonecrest, voters elected Tara Graves over incumbent Jimmy Clanton with Graves receiving 68 percent of total ballots cast. In Tucker, Cara Schroeder narrowly beat Imani Barnes with Schroeder receiving about 52 percent of the total votes.

According to Graves’ campaign website, her top priorities include making Stonecrest clean, safe, and respected; increasing public safety to reduce crime; creating more job opportunities within the city; helping the city work to improve public transportation; and form partnerships to drive economic development in Stonecrest.

According to Schroder’s campaign website, her top priorities include public safety improvements; road improvements; Lawrenceville Highway Business District improvements; implementation of Tucker’s master plans for downtown development, parks, trails, and transportation; and addressing Tucker’s growth.

Approximately 7,372 voters cast their ballots in DeKalb County during the Nov. 30 runoff election.
