Back-to-school events to offer supplies for students

The 2022-23 school year will soon be in session in DeKalb County. With City of Schools of Decatur’s first day of school scheduled for Aug. 2 and DeKalb County School District’s first day of school scheduled for Aug. 8, back-to-school events are in the works.

Check out these events offering supplies and resources for students:

Clarkston
DeKalb County District 4 Commissioner Steve Bradshaw will host a Back-to-School Supply Drive, a backpack giveaway, and vaccinations starting at 10 a.m. on July 16 at Clarkston First Baptist Church located at 3999 Church St.
“The 2021 Back-to-School Drive was a great success with the distribution of nearly 500 backpacks to DeKalb County school children,” said Bradshaw. “This year we’ve set our sights higher with a goal to double that number.”

Decatur
The Georgia Spartans basketball team will host a back-to-school giveaway and ice cream social on July 23. Starting at 11 a.m., the event will be held at Exchange Park, 2771 Columbia Drive where the splash pad will be open. School supplies and prizes will be available to school-aged children who attend.

Stone Mountain
The Space Center at 5561 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain will host its annual Back to School Block Party on July 31. From 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., students who attend can receive free clothes and shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. The DeKalb County Health Department will be on hand for free health screenings, COVID-19 vaccinations and free at-home COVID test kits. Games and entertainment will also be featured at the block party.

Tucker
The Omega Support Center at 4213 Fellowship Road, Suite C, is hosting a 2022-23 back-to-school event for DeKalb students with the goal of distributing 1,000 free backpacks, school supplies, and other resources for the upcoming school year, stated officials.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 30; school supplies, clothing, uniforms, and other materials for classrooms will be available. “The Back-to-School Celebration will offer other resources from various community partners, after school programs, health and wellness, snack bags and refreshments for students of all ages,” said officials.
