Back-to-school events to provide resources for students, educators

The 2024-25 school year is around the corner. With City Schools of Decatur (CSD) starting on July 30 and DeKalb County School District (DCSD) starting on Aug. 5, municipalities and organizations throughout DeKalb County are planning back-to-school drives, parties and giveaways to help students and teachers get back to class with the supplies they need to succeed. ATL Backpack and School Supply Giveaway Block Party

The Naomi R. Jackson Foundation is hosting its Annual ATL Backpack and School Supply Giveaway Block Party on Aug. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 495 Flat Shoals Ave. in southeast Atlanta.

Families of students in the Atlanta and DeKalb County school systems are invited to come kick off their school year with fun, snacks and fellowship, stated organizers. “To assist our families in the community, The NRJ Foundation will distribute free backpacks and school supplies to each registered student in attendance for the 2024-2025 school year,” states the organization’s website. “One backpack filled with school supplies will be issued to each child.”

Refreshments will be provided while supplies last and the foundation will also give away two school shopping sprees worth $500 each. Students must be present at the event to receive school supplies.

Cop-n-stuff drive

Those who can donate backpacks or supplies are encouraged to drop off supplies at the Chamblee Police Department at 4445 Buford Hwy NE in Chamblee any time in July.

Although police department officials said they will not be holding their own back-to-school event this year, they will be working to support other organizations that are also hosting back-to-school supply drives.

All In Decatur Bash

City Schools of Decatur (CSD) is gearing up for the All In Decatur 2024-2025 Back-to-School Bash. The event will be held July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. (rain date is July 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), at the green space across from the Elizabeth Wilson Student Support Center and Ebster Gym in downtown Decatur. The Back-to-School Bash welcomes students, families, staff, and the community for a day of togetherness and activities for all ages to enjoy, stated organizers.

CSD is also looking for vendors with donations of food, donations or offering school supplies, on-site health services, and school resources.

Back-to-School Block Party

The Trucks and Tunes Back-to-School Block Party will be held July 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lithonia City Park and Amphitheater located at 2515 Park Drive.

At the event, attendees can enjoy face painting, bounce houses, a game truck, food trucks, and music. Lithonia Middle School will be conducting a book bag and supplies giveaway, and health screenings as well as mental health resources will be available from partners such as DeKalb County Public Health and Georgia Mental Awareness.

Stone Mountain

Back-to-School Bash

The Dream Network is hosting its annual Back-to-School Bash on July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2125 Rockbridge Road SW in Stone Mountain.

Attendees can enjoy food vendors, games, music, and entertainment. A school supplies bazaar and giveaway will also be held along with a public safety briefing from local law enforcement.

Exhibitors will be on hand with more information about K-12 schools, daycare services, tutoring, before and after school care, sports, and mentoring.

Back-to-School Resource Fair

Local organizations are partnering with Friends of Hairston Park to hold a back-to-school resource fair on July 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or while supplies last. More than 100 backpacks with supplies will be available. Families that RSVP will be able to enjoy light snacks and refreshments along with games, a reading corner, interactive activities and a raffle to win prizes, stated organizers.

Each student with a ticket will receive a backpack with supplies, food tickets, and a raffle ticket for prizes.

Teacher Pull Up event

New Birth Missionary Baptist Church will provide school supply kits to 300 elementary, middle, and high school teachers during that Back-to-School Teacher’s Pull Up event. One box of supplies will be given to each registered educator.

“We are asking every teacher who registers to only select one ticket type, elementary, middle school or high school,” stated organizers.

This event is for educators only, no children or students will be allowed to participate. School ID will be required at the time of pick up.
