Brookhaven officials celebrate completion of park projects

City of Brookhaven recently commemorated the completion of years-long park bond projects that included work and upgrades to Brookhaven Park, Lynwood Park, and Murphey Candler Park, among other parks.

The last of the multimillions spent for the 2018 Brookhaven Park Bond projects happened at Briarwood Park, located at 2235 Briarwood Way. Completed improvements to Briarwood Park include:

  • A reconstructed parking lot with improved lighting, dumpster pad, and EV chargers.
  • A resurfaced driveway off Briarwood Road with new entry signage.
  • Stormwater improvements to bring the property into compliance with the current city stormwater ordinance to include underground detention below parking lot, bioswales and detention ponds.
  • A new, larger community garden.
  • A loop trail in a wooded area with a bridge crossing the stream.
  • Removal of the driveway entrance off Briarwood Way for pedestrian sidewalk entrance and a new sidewalk entrance closer to Drew Valley Road.

“I’m excited for this moment and the seasons to come. The city’s parks and greenspaces are vital to our community identity and the completion of the 2018 Park Bond projects should be celebrated,” said Councilmember Jennifer Owens after the completion of the work in November.

According to the city of Brookhaven’s website, voters in Brookhaven passed a $40 million parks bond to improve the city’s parks in 2018. The bond was intended to implement the vision of the city’s park master plans, which included playground installations, construction of new walking trails, turf fields, pavilions, a splash pad and more at Brookhaven’s 11 parks, states the city website.

Plans for a large celebration open to the public at Briarwood Park’s community garden are underway for spring of 2025, said officials.
