Brookhaven teen arrested for abusing dog during live stream online
Brookhaven Police Department (BPD) arrested 19-year-old Aspen Easterling on Jan. 30 in connection with an animal cruelty investigation that originated from social media posts circulating online.
In the stream, Easterling, a rapper and Twitch streamer also known as “Aspen Kartier,” could be seen appearing to strike a wailing puppy repeatedly and grabbing the small dog by the skins of the puppy’s back.
A Brookhaven Police investigator was able to identify the suspect and confirm the associated address within the city, according to a news release, and police officers searched Easterling’s home at 1105 Town Boulevard on Jan. 30 and booked her at the DeKalb County Jail on cruelty-to-animal charges. According to BPD, the dog is now safe and in the care of DeKalb County Animal Control.
“If someone is willing to repeatedly hit a crying puppy on the global stage of a livestream, there’s no telling what might happen when the cameras are off,” said PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is grateful to the Brookhaven Police Department for enforcing the state’s anti-cruelty law and reminds everyone never to be silent if they see or suspect abuse, as one phone call can make all the difference in a vulnerable being’s life.”
Because of BPD’s action in rescuing the 3-month-old dog, PETA officials stated the organization is sending a framed certificate to the department in recognition of officers’ professionalism and timely manner.
According to Lifeline Animal Organization, because the animal is currently involved in an open investigation, DeKalb Animal Services is not able to disclose the condition or any information regarding the animal as it may hinder the investigation.
Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact BPD at 404-637-0600.
