Cedar Grove falls to Pembroke Press Charter in overtime

On June 28, the Cedar Grove High School boys’ basketball team played Pembroke Press Charter in the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GBCA) Tournament where Cedar Grove lost in overtime 54-51.

Pembroke Press started off hot, scoring six unanswered points until Cedar Grove’s big man Javonte Floyd made a post layup to put Cedar Grove on the board. At about the 15-minute mark in the first half, Cedar Grove tied the game 8-8 until Pembroke Press’ Zemari Days scored a three to put his team up 11-8.

In the second half, Cedar Grove was trailing 24-26 when the team’s small forward Emanual Green got an easy layup to cut the lead to six. Another fastbreak layup by Cedar Grove pushed its score to 20 with 17 minutes left. Cedar Grove went on a seven-to-nothing run after Green hit a three, making the score 23-24. At the 15:35-minute mark, Cedar Grove took the lead with a post layup.

A layup by Pembroke Press ended the 7-0 run by Cedar Grove, making the score 30-26 in Cedar Grove’s favor. An and-one by Yusef Bowyer pushed Cedar Grove’s score up to 33 after he hit the free throw. Pembroke Press got three layups, making the score 33-32. Free throws by Floyd increased Cedar Grove’s score to 35.

Cedar Grove then switched its defensive scheme to a 1-3-1 zone to stop Pembroke’s middle penetration, leading to Cedar Grove going up by as many as five points.

Pembroke Press answered with an 8-0 run to retake the lead, until Floyd went to the free throw line to cut the score to 40-43, and then a three by Cedar Grove’s Norval Rhodes tied the game 43-43.

A big post move by Dontavious Stringfield helped Cedar Grove take the lead again with about three minutes left in the game. Pembroke Press hit a three making the score 46-45, but Cedar Grove went right back down the next possession to score a three themselves, making the score 48-46.

A missed layup by Pembroke Press caused the team to start fouling with under a minute left in the game. Free throws made by Cedar Grove’s Rhodes put the Saints up 50-46, but Cedar Grove fouled Pembroke Press’ Maximo Ortega at the three-point line, and he made all three to trim Cedar Grove’s lead to one-point with 13 seconds left. Pembroke fouled Bowyer, but he only made one free throw and Cedar Grove led 51-49. With eight seconds left, Pembroke Press drew a foul and made both free throws to tie the score at 51 and force overtime.

In overtime, Pembroke Press won the tipoff. Despite missing the following layup, Pembroke Press got a crucial rebound that led to a foul for two free throws. Isaiah Jenkins made both free throws, making the score 53-51.

Cedar Grove missed a three and the rebound was grabbed by Pembroke Press, causing Cedar Grove to start fouling. Ortega made one of two free throws to make the score 54-51. Cedar Grove threw up a prayer but missed from half court to end the game.
