Chamblee police officer shot

A Chamblee police officer was shot while in pursuit of armed robbery suspects driving a stolen vehicle in the early morning hours of Nov. 1, according to officials with DeKalb County Police Department.

“The DeKalb County Police Department is assisting the Chamblee Police Department in the investigation of a Chamblee police officer being shot,” stated officials. “The pursuit of an armed robbery suspect in a stolen vehicle ended in the area of Briarcliff Road and Braircliff Way shortly after 12:20 a.m. on Nov. 1.”

An official with Chamblee Police Department said that at approximately midnight, they received camera footage of a stolen vehicle.

“Officers then located and chased the vehicle until the vehicle wrecked,” said the Chamblee Police Department official. “Both suspects fled the vehicle and the passenger of the stolen vehicle fired on our officers, shooting his car multiple times. The officer was shot once. We then secured the area and contacted DeKalb County Police Department to help us look for the suspect that fled.”

DeKalb County police said one suspect has been taken into custody and at least one other suspect remains at large.

DeKalb County police described the at-large suspect as “a light-skinned male, possibly Hispanic, approximately 5’6” to 5’7”, weighing approximately 200 lbs., with short black hair, [and] wearing a long-sleeved grey shirt.”

The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous, stated officials.

Officials did not release the name of the officer who was shot or the suspect in custody. 

“Please keep the Chamblee Police Department in your thoughts and prayers as one of their officers was shot in the line of duty,” said Commissioner Robert Patrick.

UPDATE 4:45 P.M.: At approximately 4 p.m. on Nov. 1, DeKalb County Police Department tweeted that a second suspect has been arrested. “Thanks for patience as we investigated this incident,” the tweet reads. “In (reference) go the shooting of a Chamblee police officer, we have arrested the second suspect and charged him with aggravated assault on a police officer. We continue t send our prayers to the officer for a speedy recovery.” No names of the suspects or the officer have been released by officials.
