Chamblee to put millions towards park improvements
On Sept. 4, the city of Chamblee has finalized $30 million in funding to improve its parks, trails, and recreation areas.
According to a release, on Nov. 5 during last year’s General Election, Chamblee voters were asked whether to approve bonds to improve parks, trails and outdoor recreational areas. With 81% of the residents voting yes, per election results released by DeKalb County, the city began the process of issuing up to $30 million of its general obligation bonds for the purpose of financing design, acquisition, construction, equipping and/or improvement of parks, trails, and outdoor recreation areas.
A general obligation bond is to a city like a mortgage is to a household or a business, according to Chamblee officials. “It’s a long-term lending instrument that enables capital investments to be made in the near-term and paid off over time. Bond holders purchase the bonds now and the city guarantees they will be paid back at a set amount in the future,” said officials.
With the bond officially closed, the funds are now ready to be put to use to improve Chamblee’s recreational areas.
Improvement plans to Chamblee’s recreational areas include the following:
- Construction of the model trail project from Savoy Drive to North Peachtree Road to North Shallowford Road to Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
- A new park coming to 2335 Woodacres NE (Woodacres Park).
- Revitalization to Huntley Hills Park, FEMA Parcels, and surrounding greenspaces.
- Upgrades to Keswick Park’s soccer field and greenspaces in the upper area of the park
