Community provides input on direction of development in southwest DeKalb

Decide DeKalb Development Authority officials recently hosted an interactive meeting to gather input from the community on its economic development study of the Southwest DeKalb corridor.

The corridor includes portions of unincorporated DeKalb such as Belvedere Park, Kirkwood, Panthersville, Bouldercrest, and Gresham Park. Decide DeKalb Development Authority (DDDA) officials said the meeting’s goal was to get ideas and feedback on creating an economic hub to drive business, workforce development and culture in the area.

Stations providing maps, writing prompts, and examples of development in similar areas were part of the meeting. Officials on hand asked participants to share their thoughts about the potential of the corridor, plus what they would like to see established in the area.

“The Southwest DeKalb study builds on existing initiatives, like the Southwest DeKalb Tax Allocation District (TAD), which was established in 2023 to catalyze redevelopment and infrastructure improvements that support a thriving, bustling community,” stated officials. “Ensuring that residents, local business owners, artists and stakeholder voices are represented is paramount to the plan’s success.”

According to DDDA’s website, the Southwest DeKalb study focuses on three core areas:

Economic opportunities to create pathways for small business expansion, workforce development, and entrepreneurial success that generate lasting jobs and investment in the community. “We’re exploring how a creative arts district could serve as a catalyst for place-driven economic growth, attracting private investment while building on the corridor’s authentic character,” stated DDDA officials.
Cultural perseveration by honoring the unique history and character that defines the area while developing placemaking initiatives that draw visitors and celebrate local identity
Inclusive growth by ensuring that residents and existing businesses benefit directly from new development, infrastructure improvements, and investment opportunities.
