DCPL adds to digital collection

DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) patrons now have access to more e-books and audiobooks and shorter waitlists to rent popular titles, according to a Jan. 11 announcement.

The expansion was made following an allocation of $25,000 from District 2’s discretionary fund by DeKalb County District 2 Commissioner Michelle Long Spears.

“We thank Commissioner Spears for leading the charge to fund the growth of our digital offerings. Now residents will have more choices for entertainment and information than ever before,” said DeKalb County Public Library Director Alison Weissinger. “In 2023, use of our digital collection was up over 25 percent compared to last year. DeKalb commuters, in particular, love listening to audiobooks while they’re on the go.”

A DCPL spokesperson said the funding allocation will increase the number of titles available and will add backup copies for popular titles, reducing “the overall time that a patron waits in line for a popular title from months to weeks.”

The spokesperson added that the timing was beneficial due to DCPL’s yearly increase in activity, “because many people start the new year with a resolution to read more.”
“Democracies thrive when citizens have access to information and can make informed decisions. This funding will help the library put more materials in the hands and mobile devices of more people,” said Spears.

DCPL’s e-books and audiobooks are available free of charge to library patrons, according to a news release.

The news release states that DCPL carries audiobook titles in mystery, thrillers, romance, business, history, young adult, children’s books, graphic novels, and other genres.

The recent funding allocation “added more than 500 items, and focused on popular titles like Lessons in Chemistry, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, Atomic Habits and Black Cake,” the spokesperson added.
