Decatur attorney, coach assisting civil rights documentary

India Ali—an attorney from DeKalb County and an assistant basketball coach at Southwest DeKalb High School—is one of 12 Black women working on the social justice film Higher Ground to “tell Black stories through the visual medium.”

The documentary is supported and backed by the University of Southern California in conjunction with the School of Cinematic Arts. The documentary’s creators said it focuses on several generations of the civil rights movement in South Carolina.

“I joined the Higher Ground project to provide legal support for the crew of beautiful Black women as they shed light on Black stories in South Carolina,” said Ali.

According to a release about the film, Ali is heavily involved in her community, holds volunteer outreach programs and offers donation-based legal seminars.

Ali is also the assistant basketball coach for the Lady Panthers of Southwest DeKalb—her alma mater—and holds a business marketing and fine arts degree from Hofstra University, where she played college basketball.

The film is still in production, and a fall release is planned, according to staff.
