DeKalb Alum set for Senior Bowl 

Stephenson High School alum DJ Wonnum is one of 14 players with Georgia connections, and the only player from DeKalb County, playing in the 2020 Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama Jan. 25.

Wonnum totaled 137 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks during his four years at South Carolina.

The Stephenson alum played in 41 games for the Gamecocks after playing in all 14 of South Carolina’s games as a freshman.

While at South Carolina Wonnum accumulated many awards and honors, including 2019 team captain, 2019 All-SEC honorable mention, 2019 comeback player of the year, multiple SEC defensive player of the week awards, multiple SEC academic honor roll recognitions, and appeared on Athlon Sports’ second team All-SEC freshmen team.

As a senior at South Carolina, Wonnum was a selected to the Associated Press’ All-SEC second team after finishing the season with 37 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Wonnum recorded 29.5 career tackles for loss ranks which ranked ninth on South Carolina’s all-time list. He was a four-time SEC Defensive Player or Lineman of the Week selection, a two-time team captain and one of just three sophomores who was named a permanent team captain in South Carolina history, according to GamecocksOnline.

As a senior at Stephenson, Wonnum was listed as the No. 77 weakside defensive end in the country and the No. 115 player in Georgia by 247Sports’ composite recruiting rankings.

According to GamecocksOnline, Wonnum was named to the All-Region team for Class 6 – 5A as a senior after collecting 38 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

The NFL coaching staffs from the Lions’ and Bears’ teams will coach the two Senior Bowl teams.

The Chicago Bears’ coaching staff is 0-4 in the Senior Bowl, while the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff is 2-6-1 in the Senior Bowl.

The 2020 Senior Bowl is scheduled to kickoff in Mobile, Alabama at 2:30 p.m. ET Jan. 25. The game will be broadcast on NFL Network and can be streamed at
