DeKalb Rape Crisis Center acquired by Decatur organization
An organization based in Decatur with the mission of helping women and children impacted by domestic violence acquired operations of a vital resource to assist survivors of sexual violence earlier this year.
In March, the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV) officially took over the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center (DRCC), with officials from WRCDV describing the process as “a transition to preserve and strengthen services for the community.”
According to Amber Harris, director of development and communications for WRCDV, the process began when DRCC’s executive director retired and its board of directors approached WRCDV to explore the possibility of a merger.
“The process was thoughtful and deliberate, focused on ensuring there was no disruption in services for survivors of sexual violence,” said Harris. “Our organizations worked closely together, with guidance from legal experts and a nonprofit management consultant, to align operations, secure program continuity, and retain the dedicated staff and volunteers who make this critical work possible.”
Throughout its history, DRCC has provided support through 24/7 hotlines, forensic exams, counseling, and legal advocacy – a tradition that officials said will continue, and expand, now that it has merged with WRCDV.
“This strategic, mission-driven move allows for a more comprehensive spectrum of care for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors,” stated officials. “With expanded therapy and community support services added to the resources DRCC offered, we’re building a more powerful safety net for our community.”
“We want the community to know that no one has to face the aftermath of sexual violence alone,” continued Harris. “Whether the assault happened yesterday or years ago, our advocates are trained to meet survivors wherever they are in their healing journey. We also offer prevention education and outreach to help create a safer DeKalb for everyone. It’s an honor and a deep responsibility to carry forward the legacy of the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, and we are committed to ensuring these services are accessible, survivor-centered, and community-driven for years to come.”
