DeKalb teacher drowns after saving a life
DeKalb County School District (DCSD) announced the passing of Rockbridge Elementary School teacher and coach Derrick Moore, who reportedly died on Aug. 7 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach Police report that Moore lost his life in a situation where he went into the water to save a young girl who had been caught in a rip current. Moore was able to get the girl to safety but was then pulled under by the rip current and was not immediately located. Police reported that the body of Moore washed ashore on Aug. 8.
DCSD said that Moore was a teacher and coach at Rockbridge and was described as an educator who cared deeply for his students and community.
“Mr. Moore, lovingly referred to as ‘Coach’ by his students, was a current teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School, where he was a dedicated educator who cared deeply for his students and school community. Prior to joining Rockbridge Elementary School, Mr. Moore served as a teacher at Jolly Elementary School,” said DCSD school board member Diijon DaCosta.
“Throughout his time with DeKalb County School District, Mr. Moore made a meaningful impact on the students, families, colleagues, and communities he served,” stated DCSD officials. “His presence, care, and dedication to education will be deeply missed.”
“During this difficult time, the DeKalb County School District community will come together with compassion, patience, and understanding to honor Mr. Moore’s life and legacy. Our thoughts are with Mr. Moore’s family, loved ones, colleagues, students, and everyone whose life was touched by his kindness, dedication, and service to DCSD,” officials continued.
DCSD also stated that counselors and other support personnel will be available throughout Rockbridge and Jolly Elementary Schools to provide students and staff with a supportive space to talk, ask questions, and receive support as they mourn the loss.
