DeKalb teams set for homecoming after dominating in week six

Teams from DeKalb County picked up eight wins during week six of the high school football season, with a full slate on tap for week seven – including several homecoming games.

Southwest DeKalb 37, Maynard Jackson 0

The Southwest DeKalb Panthers opened Region 5-5A high school football action rolling to a 37-0 road victory over the Maynard Jackson Jaguars at Henderson Stadium in Atlanta on Sept. 25.

Senior quarterback Braylon Carter led the way with two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass to William Bryant. Myson Perry added a rushing touchdown and a safety on one of his two blocked punts in the game.

Marquise Ealey keyed the defensive effort on the night with an interception. The Panthers defense had 11 tackles for a loss and a sack. Matthew Brown had three tackles for a loss (eight total tackles), Conner Stroud added two tackles for a loss and the sack and D’Mani Bent had two tackles for a loss out of his nine total tackles.

Jordan Christie returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to add to the scorecard.

The Panthers (3-2, 1-0) travel to Adams Stadium on Oct. 2 for a 7 p.m.  kickoff against the Druid Hills Red Devils (3-2, 0-1) in another Region 5-5A matchup.

Chamblee 37, Midtown 9

The Chamblee Bulldogs got big plays from Ahmad Barry and Miles Boyer to get back on the winning track in Region 4-6A play with their 37-9 homecoming victory over the Midtown Knights (0-5, 0-3) at North DeKalb Stadium on Sept. 25.

Barry, a senior linebacker, picked off two passes against the Knights — including a 97-yard pick six. Barry finished with eight tackles and tacked on a two-point conversion catch as well.

Boyer, a senior quarterback, hit 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown while adding 53 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries rushing the football.

The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-2) play host to the Meadowcreek Mustangs (1-4, 0-3) on Oct. 1 with a 6 p.m. kickoff at North DeKalb Stadium.

Columbia 63, Cedar Grove 6

Freshman DeMarco Cody struck quick for the Columbia Eagles in a 63-6 Region 6-3A win over the Cedar Grove Saints (0-5, 0-2) at Cobb Stadium on Sept. 25.

Cody got to work on the opening kickoff and returned the kick 80 yards to kickstart Columbia’s big scoring night.

The freshman then returned a pick-six 97 yards as he matched his touchdown output of two from the big win over Hapeville Charter the week before. He then upped his touchdown total with fumble returns of 45-yards and a 25-yards for scores.

Demarion Davis got into the act on special teams with a punt return for a touchdown. Offensively, De’Quarrion Trammell rushed for two touchdowns and Czar Daniels threw a touchdown pass to Jamarion Davis that covered 50 yards.

Dunwoody 41, Alcovy 8

The Dunwoody Wildcats rushing attack accounted for four touchdowns in a 41-8 rout on the road versus the Alcovy Tigers (1-4, 1-2) in Region 4-6A action.

Senior running back Bradley Stephens again was the catalyst of the ground attack with 137 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (4-1, 3-0). Duke White jumped in on the rushing attack with 96 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Liam Whitehurst played the final quarter and a half at quarterback and completed four of five passes for 58 yards including a touchdown pass to Charlie Survilas.

The Wildcat defense allowed the Tigers to score on the opening drive before pitching a shutout the rest of the way while allowing Alcovy just 150 yards of total offense for the game.

Dunwoody continues region play on Oct. 2 by hosting the Lakeside Vikings (2-3, 2-1) in a 7 p.m. game at North DeKalb Stadium.

Stephenson 47, Pace Academy 0

The Stephenson Jaguars opened Region 5-4A competition with a 47-0 road victory over the Pace Academy Knights (0-5, 0-1) on Sept. 25.

Jayden Johnson got the Jaguars started with a touchdown run in the first quarter to go with a safety by Jeremiah Hill with a tackle in the end zone. A field goal and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Zabrian Boler to Kruz Marion added up to a 19-0 half time lead.
