DeKalb well represented at Tip-Off Classic

Atlanta area basketball players—including some from DeKalb County—and AAU teams were back in action July 3-5 in the Tip-Off Classic at Suwanee Sports Academy.

Top teams in the area such as the Atlanta Celtics, Game Elite, Team Huncho, Atlanta Xpress and others participated in the classic. The Atlanta Celtics made headlines for adding five-star point guard JD Davison to its roster for the event.

– Chase Cormier helped Game Elite 16U win a championship at the Tip-Off Classic, after helping lead Greenforest-McCalep to a state championship appearance last season.

In the 16U bracket, Chase Cormier helped Game Elite win a championship over Atlanta Xpress. Last high school season, Cormier helped Greenforest-McCalep to a state championship appearance, where the team lost to St. Francis High School.

Cormier started the Tip-Off Classic championship game with a deep-three before teammate Scoot Henderson caught fire and scored nine points in the last minutes of the first quarter.

Cormier finished the game with seven points and five assists, after notching 10 points, five rebounds and five assists against Double Trouble in the semifinal game.

JD Davison became the third top 50 player on the Atlanta Celtics when he joined the team for the Tip-Off Classic.

According to Dan McDonald of Rivals, the University of Georgia and others have shown interest in Cormier. Tai Young of Hoopseen reported Belmont, Georgia State, and Elon as other schools showing interest in Cormier.

Since starting his summer run with Game Elite at The Opening, Cormier also has picked up an offer from Winthrop University.

Joyful Hawkins—who played at Decatur High School last season before transferring to Kell High School—led the way for Game Elite in the championship win with 19 points.

St. Pius guard Brookes Kahlert had another strong performance at The Tip-Off Classic, with his highlight coming in the form of nine assists against GA United.

Kahlert’s team—the 17U Atlanta Timberwolves—went 3-1, with wins over the Georgia Knights, GA United and Team Smash, and a loss to Game Elite. Cormier’s 16U Game Elite team went 4-0, with wins over the Atlanta Nets, Atlanta Celtics, Double Trouble and Atlanta Xpress.
