Druid Hills sweeps regular season finale

Druid Hills High School’s boys’ and girls’ soccer teams both got decisive victories during the teams’ regular season finales on April 12.

Zaila Karim-Hidalgo converted a hattrick and Emily Meier added two more goals as the Druid Hills Lady Red Devils shutout the Heritage Lady Patriots 6-0, while the Class 4A No. 7 ranked Druid Hills Red Devils broke open a 1-1 match with the Heritage Patriots with a four-goal second half on the way to a 5-1 win.

Emlen Cooper got the Druid Hills Lady Red Devils (10-5-2) on the board with a steal deep in Heritage’s end of the field and cashed it in for a goal less than nine minutes into the match for an early 1-0 lead.

Heritage keeper Cayla Ward kept it at 1-0 with a pair of saves before Hidalgo put together back-to-back goals in a 32-second span to make it 3-0.

Meier pushed the advantage to 4-0 at the 24:59 mark of the second half with her first goal of the game.

Ward turned away two Druid Hills’ shots in a 26-second span and another at the 14:07 mark before Meier found the net again thanks to a nifty pass by Asa Copeland with 12:37 to play and extended the margin to 5-0.

Hidalgo completed the hattrick at the 8:09 mark of the second half as Alyssa Estep fed her on the way to goal to close out the 6-0 victory.

Druid Hills’ defense and keeper Blythe Fisher (3 saves) limited Heritage to just seven shots for the match, while the Druid Hills’ offense put together 17 shots and six goals. Emlen Cooper and Izzy Zyglis had assists in the match.

The Lady Red Devils are the No. 3 seed in Region 6-4A and go on the road to Region 7-4A No. 2 seed and No. 10 ranked Southeast Whitfield (10-3-1) at 6 p.m. on April 19.

The boys team also got a multi-score win in its final tune up before the playoffs.

Mason Martz took a pass from Justin Nyijak and put a shot past Heritage keeper Jonathan Hermandez to keep the score tied at 1-1.

Wyatt Bennett had three saves in the first 13 minutes of the second half for the Red Devils to keep the game at 1-1 before Martz’s goal made it 2-1. One of the saves was a big leap to his left to smother a ball just in front of the goal six minutes into the half.

Druid Hills struck again when freshman Brayden Schoenthal split the defenders on a pass from Eh Soo and squeezed a shot over the outstretched foot of Hernandez and the goal post to make it 3-1 with 19:30 to play.

Soo got another assist with 12:59 to play as he lofted a pass over the defense and Nyijak out raced Hernandez to the ball and put it past him to up the lead to 4-1.

Soo got in on the scoring side with 7:53 to play as he blasted a free kick from 26 yards out into the upper right corner of the net to make the final of 5-1.

The Red Devils go on the road in the first round of the Class 4A boys’ state playoffs on April 19 for a 7 p.m. meeting with Region 7 No. 2 seed Cedartown (10-7-0), losers of their last two matches this past week.
