Dunwoody honors MLK

City of Dunwoody officials invited residents to volunteer for the 10th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19.

Dunwoody Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Dunwoody-Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., will celebrate the national holiday with volunteer projects and a blood drive.

“Our Chapter’s strength is rooted in service and shared purpose,” said Terris Ross, president of the Dunwoody-Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. “Initiatives like this bring us together to uplift others and model for our children what it means to lead with compassion, equity, and a commitment to opportunity for all.”

Residents are encouraged to register online at https://www.dunwoodyga.gov/community and join one of several impactful projects:

  • Planting 86 trees at the Dunwoody Nature Center with Trees Atlanta (starts at 10 a.m.)
  • Planting 5,000 daffodils at Brook Run Park with the Daffodil Project (starts at 9 a.m.)
  • Cleanup and maintenance at the Dunwoody Community Garden and Orchard, including raking and rebuilding raised beds (starts at 9 a.m.)
  • Blood donations with the American Red Cross, available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Atlanta Church of Christ, 5676 Roberts Drive (pre-registration at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give is recommended)

“We are thankful for the hands and hearts that come together each year,” said Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “Whether planting, cleaning, or giving, these projects show how we can honor Dr. King’s legacy by working side by side to strengthen our community.”

Observed annually on the third Monday in January, the National Day of Service celebrates the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is the only federal holiday designated as a day of service, encouraging Americans to empower individuals, bridge barriers, and strengthen communities.
