Dunwoody takes down Midtown for homecoming victory
Dunwoody stepped into its Sept. 18 matchup with a chance to extend its two-game winning streak as it faced a winless Midtown High School.
Things started well for Dunwoody and only got better as the game progressed. On Dunwoody’s first possession of the game, the Wildcats reached the Midtown 2-yard line before eventually handing it off to senior running back Bradley Stephens, who gave the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead.
Midtown responded with a 99-yard run from senior quarterback Dorian Fox to tie the game 7-7. From there, however, Midtown struggled to find its footing.
Dunwoody responded quickly as the team scored on a two-play drive. Stephens burst up the middle for a 73-yard touchdown to give Dunwoody a 14-7 lead as the teams headed into the second quarter. Midtown had a rough start to the second quarter as Fox threw an interception to sophomore defensive back Jack Graviss. Dunwoody capitalized quickly as senior receiver Kaden Harris hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass to extend Dunwoody’s lead to 21-7.
The rest of the second quarter was filled with turnovers. Midtown fumbled on the ensuing drive, with Dunwoody recovering possession, only for the Wildcats to fumble immediately and give the ball right back to the Knights. On the Knights’ next possession, Fox threw an interception. Dunwoody turned the ball over once again when Stephens was strip-sacked, with the Knights recovering the fumble.
Midtown maintained possession and drove down the field before nailing a 22-yard field goal. This brought Midtown within 11 as the score was now 21-10.
On Midtown’s next drive, the Knights were forced to punt, but the rough night continued. A bad snap forced Midtown’s punter to kick the ball out of bounds for a safety. This extended Dunwoody’s lead to 23-10 going into the half.
Dunwoody had full control of the second half as it did not allow Midtown to put up any points through the third and fourth quarters. Meanwhile, the Wildcats only tacked on more to ensure they went home with a victory.
Dunwoody junior running back Duke White rushed for a 23-yard touchdown, followed by a 34-yard field goal from senior kicker Santiago Garcia and a 2-yard touchdown run from senior running back Jayden White. The Wildcats added 17 points in the second half, pulling away from the Knights and securing a 40-10 victory.
Dunwoody can improve to 4-1 as the Wildcats head to Covington to take on Alcovy High School on Sept. 25.
