Lessons learned from Cardoon the cat

The Wylde Center Oakhurst Garden in Decatur is a special place to me. I visit multiple times each year and enjoy the community plant sales, seeing what’s growing in the garden beds and just taking a leisurely stroll around the property.

My favorite resident “plant” that could be found anytime of year was Cardoon. Not to be mistaken with the stalky, artichoke-like flora, the Oakhurst Garden’s Cardoon had four paws as well as black and white fur.

For many years, Cardoon the cat was a fixture in the area. I remember the first time I visited the garden, which is open to the public, and was greeted by Cardoon, who led me on a proper tour this way and that of the garden’s many features. As far as ambassadors go, Cardoon was the best.

When not leading curious visitors around the grounds, Cardoon could often be found stretched out among the many plants the Wylde Center offers for sale. More than once, I reached to grab a sprout only for my hand to land on something soft, warm and furry. He especially loved to doze near the catnip, I noticed.

Earlier in July, Wylde Center staff announced on social media that Cardoon had passed away and asked for the community to share memories and stories of the kitty who called Oakhurst Garden home. I learned, after seeing more than 500 reactions and 100 comments, that Cardoon was a friend to many throughout Decatur and beyond.

So, in honor of Oakhurst Garden’s favorite fuzzy feline, here are some life lessons Cardoon taught many of us:

• Be a welcoming presence in your community. No matter who was visiting Oakhurst Garden, be it kids, adults or even dogs, Cardoon greeted everyone.
• It’s ok to set boundaries. Often Cardoon loved receiving pets and head scratches – but he wasn’t afraid to let anyone know when he wasn’t in the mood!
• Slow down and enjoy your surroundings. Cardoon could be found exploring and appreciating every corner, nook and cranny of the Oakhurst Garden – and sometimes his neighbor’s properties as well.
• Never let the opportunity for a good nap go to waste. Especially in the sunshine or on a favorite green chair (a heinous piece of furniture, but beloved by Cardoon according to staff and volunteers) kick back and catch some Zs when you get the chance.

I smiled reading the many comments from other Oakhurst Garden enjoyers about their memories of Cardoon. May his spirit continue to be a peaceful guide in the garden.
