Lynwood Park Recreation Center suffers gas main break

Brookhaven’s Lynwood Park Recreation Center was evacuated Aug. 29 due to a gas main break.

City contractors working on parking lot upgrades to the recreation center, hit an unmarked gas line around 11 a.m. according to Brookhaven officials.

Immediately after the gas main break, employees located inside the recreation center, which serves as Brookhaven’s parks and recreation headquarters, were evacuated.

The closure lasted less than an hour.

No surrounding buildings in the area needed to be evacuated and no road closures were needed.

Brookhaven Police and the DeKalb Fire Department were present and secured the scene.

The fire department clamped the line, and employees were allowed back in the building. Atlanta Gas Light then came out and made repairs to the line the same day.

“We are happy to say that everything is back to normal,” Brookhaven’s communications manager Ann Marie Quill said.

Contractors were able to resume work that afternoon.
