Marist student named Track Athlete of the Year

Marking its 60th anniversary of celebrating high school athletes, Atlanta Track Club hosted a ceremony to honor its 2024 All-Metro Track and Field Team and announced the boys’ and girls’ Track Athletes of the Year. These athletes together won eight titles and set three state records this season.

Atlanta Track Club is a nonprofit committed to creating an active and healthy Atlanta, and with more than 30,000 members, it is the second-largest running organization in the United States, according to a press release.

“There is nothing more treasured at Atlanta Track Club than its All-Metro tradition,” said Atlanta Track Club CEO Rich Kenah. “The Club’s commitment to the youth goes back to its roots and comes from the heart in a way that makes us proud, as do the 55 athletes who are being honored. You are champions all.”

After twice being named Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year, Marist High School’s Tommy Latham adds Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year to his list of accolades after a record-breaking season that included the fastest 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters, and 4×1 600-meter relay in Georgia high school history. Latham set the 1,600 meters mark of 4:01.66 in winning the state title, breaking the 25-year-old state record in the process, and set the 3,200 meter of 8:46.88 earlier in the season before also winning the 6A title at that distance.

Druid Hills’ Sanaa Fredrick also represented DeKalb County by making the Girls All-Metro Track and Field Team for her 100 meters, 200 meters, 4×100 meter relay, and 4×200 meter relay races. Fredrick became one of the most decorated girls’ track athletes in DeKalb history as she completed a third consecutive sweep in 100-meter dash (11.444) and the 200-meter dash (23.16) in this year’s state meet, giving her six individual gold medals to go with a silver in the 200-meter and a bronze in the 100-meter in 2021.
