Officer, suspect dead after traffic stop {VIDEO}

After a Dec. 13 routine traffic stop near Candler Road and Tilson Road in Decatur an unnamed officer and suspect are dead.

 According to DeKalb County Police, around 5 p.m. the officer conducted a traffic stop, from which the suspect fled on foot. During a foot pursuit, the suspect allegedly shot the officer with a handgun. The officer was transported to Grady Hospital in critical condition.

 A K-9 officer tracked the suspect to where he was hiding behind a nearby Candler Road business.

 The suspect allegedly then shot the K-9 officer. The K-9 was transported to a nearby veterinarian in critical condition. The current condition of the dog is unknown.

 “Several officers returned fire,” said James Conroy, chief of the DeKalb County Police Department. “The suspect received several gunshot wounds, was transported to [Grady] hospital where he also died as a result of his injuries.”

 DeKalb County Police did not release the name of the officer and did not know the identity of the suspect at 8:30 p.m. the same night.

 “All I can say is he was an adult male in his 20’s to 30’s,” Conroy said about the suspect.

 The police officer worked with the county police department for two years.

 The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the incident.

 “I am very proud of the men and women of the police department,” Conroy said.
