Out-of-state opponents, all-DeKalb games on tap for week two

The second week of high school football action in Georgia will take place Aug. 24 – 26 and features four all-DeKalb games, 21 teams in action, and two DeKalb teams playing out-of-state opponents.

After snapping multi-season long losing streaks in 2022 and winning their 2023 openers, Druid Hills and McNair will be one of the all-DeKalb matchups taking place when the teams kick off at North DeKalb Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.

Druid Hills won its season opener on the back of Jaden George’s three-touchdown, 93-yard rushing performance against KIPP Atlanta. Xavier Norris recovered a fumble caused by John Golden that led to one of George’s touchdowns and Taylor Holloman recovered another fumble for a touchdown.

McNair started its season with a 25-7 win over Northview. The McNair Mustangs’ defense accounted for two pick sixes from Keyontae Phillips and Syncere Carroll, while Jeremy Victors ran for 100 yards and threw two touchdowns to lead the offense.

Druid Hills broke a six-game losing streak to the Mustangs last season with a thrilling 21-20 win. Both teams finished the 2022 season with 4-6 records and McNair holds a 7-3 advantage in the series whose first game was played in 1988, a 20-0 Druid Hills win.

Chamblee (1-0) vs. Towers (0-1)

Chamblee travels to Avondale Stadium to take on Towers on Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Towers had a five-game win streak in the series from 1996-2000, but Chamblee has won the last two meetings in 2001 (8-7) and 2023 (59-0).

Towers is coming off a 26-6 loss to Rutland. The Titans’ lone score came as Tramon Wooten grabbed a touchdown pass.

Chamblee beat South Cobb 35-29 on the road behind a 277-yard performance from quarterback Ashton Bolston. Larry Harris also had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass, and had 12 tackles on defense.

Out-of-state opponents

Cedar Grove will play a Thursday night game in Coconut Creek, Florida to get the week started when the Saints take on the Monarch Knights.

The Saints are no stranger to road games after only having one home game in 2022. Last season’s schedule for Cedar Grove featured trips to Washington D.C. as well as to several Georgia powerhouses such as Bainbridge, Collins Hill, and Colquitt County.

Monarch won its division last season before falling in overtime in round two of Florida’s 4M playoffs. Cedar Grove beat 5A No. 9 Dutchtown 34-33 in overtime at Morehouse College in week one of the 2023 season.

Marist will host Pike Road on Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The game is a homecoming after Marist beat Pike Road 33-22 in Pike Road, Alabama last season.

The War Eagles are playing for the first win of the season after dropping an eight-point game at Gainesville in week one. Pike Road will play its first game of the season when it travels to Marist, after it went 7-5 and lost in the second round of the Alabama 6A playoffs.

Southwest DeKalb (1-0) vs. Tucker (1-0)

The two winningest football programs in DeKalb County School District will go head-to-head on Aug. 26 at Morehouse College at 7:30 p.m. – marking the third and fourth DeKalb teams to play at Morehouse this season.

The 24th meeting between Southwest DeKalb (1-0) and Tucker (1-0) is a non-region battle between two programs that district officials said have combined for 1,092 wins, 36 region titles, and four state titles.

Southwest DeKalb and Tucker first played each other in 1966, which was a 13-9 Southwest DeKalb win. Tucker has won eight of the last 10, including a 31-29 win in 2021. Southwest DeKalb won last season’s game 34-9 to break a six-game losing streak to Tucker.

Southwest DeKalb was the only DeKalb team to get a week one win, under first-year head coach Marion Bell, in a 20-6 decision against South Atlanta. The win came behind a 65-yard pick six for Tre Alexander and a 48-yard touchdown run from Josh Jones.

Tucker was the only Dekalb team to win an intra-county matchup in week one when Jordan McCoy ran for five touchdowns in a 54-13 win over Miller Grove.
