Record-breaking event raises funds for women’s resource center

Runners, racers, and community members showed a lot of love by breaking the record for money raised at this year’s Love Run 5K, which raised more than $30,000 for the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV).

For eleven years, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston and her team have laced up their sneakers alongside hundreds of participants for the annual event. This year’s race, which took place Feb. 28 on and around Decatur Square, drew record-breaking turnout with more than 500 walkers and runners.

Boston said she organized the first event in 2016 while serving as DeKalb County solicitor-general to commemorate Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and raise money for the WRCDV. The nonprofit, based in Decatur, provides emergency shelter, legal aid, and other resources for domestic violence survivors and their children.

“Supporting this critical organization in our community is more important than ever,” said Boston. This year’s event was the first Love Run since WRCDV expanded their mission to sexual assault survivors by acquiring the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center in 2025 – meaning funds raised during the event will go further to help more women and children.

At press time, the total raised during this year’s race was still being finalized with organizers confirming that at least $31,000 would be donated to WRCDV.

According to data collected in 2023 and 2024 on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, intimate partner violence is common. It affects nearly 43.5 women million during their lifetimes.
