Redan falls in playoff series to Mount Paran

In a tightly contested high school baseball playoff series against No.2 Mount Paran Christian, the Redan Raiders fell short in advancing to the 2A state quarterfinals.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third when an error made by Mount Paran turned into an opportunity for the Raiders as Colin Brightwell scored from second on a bad throw by the Eagle’s third baseman, making the score 1-0. Both teams went three-and-out in the fourth.

Mount Paran got on base with a double to start off the fifth inning. Rhett Bonner hit a high-fly sacrifice to allow Chase Landmesser to run in for the Eagles’ tying score. The Raider’s quickly got on base to respond with two singles made by Jaden Johnson and Eris Smith but left them stranded on first and second with three outs by Mount Paran in the bottom of the fifth.

A single hit by Mount Paran would start off a long sixth inning for Redan. A double by the Eagles pushed two runners onto second and third base. A high-fly sacrifice by Mount Paran allowed Carson Hodge for the Eagle’s score, making it 2-1. The Eagle would then go on to hit three consecutive singles to score two more runs making it 4-1.

In the seventh, the Eagles would get on second base with a double but were quickly halted with a double play made by Matthew Evans to stop the momentum. The Raiders would make their last stand with Brett Andrews hitting a single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Andrews would steal second but would be left stranded as Mount Paran would get three outs ending the game.

 Redan falls 5-6 to Mount Paran in game two

In game two of the series, Redan made a last stand to advance to the 2A state quarterfinals but fell short to Mount Paran 5-6.

The game would start off with two errors made by Redan, which led to two unearned runs by Mount Paran, making the score 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Redan gained momentum at the top of the second inning with a double by Tyrell Wyatt but would be stopped by the Eagles. The Raiders quickly moved on to the third inning with three consecutive outs at the bottom of the second, two of which were strikeouts by Evans.

Evans started off the third inning with an RBI double to score Derek Peoples, making the score 2-1. Mount Paran would get two players on second and third at the bottom of the third but would be stranded by Evans with two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Landmesser hit a solo home run to left field for Mount Paran to make the score 3-2. Josh Westbrook scored Wyatt with an RBI single to tie the game 3-3 at the top of the sixth. Mount Paran got five hits and three scores at the bottom of the sixth making the score 6-3.

Redan battled back at the top of the seventh with Peoples hitting a two-run homer making the score 5-6.  Wyatt hit a single and stole second but would be stranded as Mount Paran’s relief pitcher got a strikeout ending the game and the series.

The Redan Raiders’ varsity baseball team ended the season with a record of 23-4 in the regular season and 2-2 in the postseason. The Raiders swept playoff foe Fellowship Christian High School in the first round of the playoffs. Both AJ Holloway and Evans gave the Raiders two complete game pitching performances as they combined for a total of 14 innings in the playoff series, with Holloway pitching a six-hit game shutout in the series. Redan would ultimately get knocked out in the second round by Mount Paran Christian High School in a contested series the Raiders lost 2-0.
