Results in after runoff election

The June 16 runoffs locked in the names that will be on the general election ballot in November.

Voters chose billionaire businessman Rick Jackson as the Republican to face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, in a race to the highest office as Georgia governor.

While former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones lost his bid to opponent Tim Fleming for the Republican side in the Secretary of State race, former county commissioner Larry Johnson was voted the Democrat who will run in the upcoming State Senate District 10 race. Johnson received approximately 68 percent of the ballots cast in the runoff against challenger Gabrielle Rogers.

DeKalb County residents also voted to secure Keyanna Jones Moore as the Democratic nominee for District 3. Jones Moore unseated incumbent Nicole Massiah, earning approximately 62 percent of the total ballots cast.

“This is our south DeKalb,” said Jones Moore after her win. “Candler Road was once the crown jewel of this area, but now it stands almost desolate, because we had elected officials content to let this area suffer. It’s time for us to take our south DeKalb back.”

Jones Moore will face off against the Republican nominee Andrea Bass Smith (who ran unopposed in the primaries) to determine who will win the seat to become the next District 3 county commissioner.

Statewide, Georgia had approximately 6.6 percent of active voters turn out for the runoffs, while in DeKalb County, approximately 14 percent of registered voters cast 69,278 ballots, according to data from the Georgia Secretary of State’s website.

“The (June 16) election reflects the hard work of DeKalb Voter Registration and Elections (VRE) staff, poll workers and county partners who have remained committed to ensuring voters had a secure, accessible and transparent election experience,” said Keisha L. Smith, executive director of DeKalb VRE.  “We thank DeKalb County voters for their participation as we continue the important work of processing to officially certify the primary election runoff.”

The election results remain unofficial and incomplete pending the completion of post-election activities, including the review of provisional ballots, absentee ballots received by the statutory deadline, and reconciliation of precinct returns, according to a statement from DeKalb VRE officials.

The DeKalb Board of Registration and Elections is scheduled to vote to certify the election results on June 23.
