S.T.E.A.M. Fair invites students to free learning expo

Students in DeKalb County with an interest in all things S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) are invited to come out for a free event in Stonecrest for a day of “hands-on learning and discovery,” according to organizers.

On April 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the DeKalb section of the National Council of Negro Women will host their 2026 S.T.E.A.M. Fair at Black Wall Street Market, located at 8109 Mall Parkway.

Attendance is free, and a science project competition will offer cash prizes for winning students.

Attendees can also participate in arts projects, music production demonstrations, and meet and learn about live reptiles at the event.

“This event is designed to spark creativity, encourage innovation, and expose our youth to exciting opportunities in S.T.E.A.M. fields,” said organizers. “Whether your child is participating or just coming to explore, it will be a powerful day of learning and inspiration. Let’s continue building pathways for excellence in our community.”

According to S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. Georgia, which has a mission of spearheading S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. programs at the Georgia Department of Education, project-based learning can help prepare students to join important workforce sectors.

“This cross-disciplinary education approach focuses on project-based methods while balancing hard skills with soft and social skills,” explains Teachers For All, a nonprofit that recruits teachers to work in marginalized communities. “This combination allows students to fulfill the core need for knowledge while promoting soft competencies development. It also allows all students to feel valued and respected for who they are, which makes education more inclusive.”
