Shelter in place order issued in Doraville, Avondale Estates
The cities of Doraville and Avondale Estates are the to join several other DeKalb County and Georgia cities in issuing orders for its residents to stay at home or shelter in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Doraville City Council approved an amendment to its emergency order March 26 that calls for residents to shelter in place except for essential activities. Mayor Joseph Geierman had gone on record Wednesday with a statement calling for sheltering in place.
“The most effective approach to dealing with this virus would be led by the state or federal government and would involve both strict regulations about sheltering in place as well as widespread testing,” said Geierman. “In the absence of that leadership, however, it is up to individual municipalities to pick up the slack and try to mitigate the spread of the virus as much as possible.”
The city’s restrictions don’t prohibit residents from going outside for activities such as walking, running, gardening, etc., or from making necessary trips for work, groceries or appointments. However, the city has banned the use of playground equipment, soccer pitches and basketball courts.
On March 19, the city council imposed restrictions that included closing restaurants to in-person customers; closing gyms, sports clubs and personal grooming establishments; and prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people.
Avondale Estates approved its new restrictions March 27. Residents are instructed to leave their residences for essential activities only.
A stay-at-home order has been issued in the cities of Atlanta, Brookhaven and Decatur. A 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew has been issued in the city of Tucker while voluntary curfews have been issued in unincorporated DeKalb County and the cities of Chamblee, Pine Lake, Stonecrest and Stone Mountain.
