Stone Mountain tennis earns accolades

After a historic season for Stone Mountain High School’s varsity tennis, Stone Mountain Pirates player Jaden Turnerwas named Region 5-3A Player of the Year and head coach Tyisha Monteiro was named region 5-3A Coach of the Year.

After Stone Mountain went more than five years without a team, Monteiro led the Pirates to the school’s best season since 1991 in her first year. The team ended the season with a 11-0-2 record, which included the Region 5-3A title – an achievement no other Pirates team is known to have accomplished in the school’s tennis history.

No. 1 singles player Turner finished the season undefeated in matches and helped lead his team to the playoffs, something the team hasn’t seen since 2019. Turner was also named All-County Player of the Year by DeKalb County School District (DCSD).

“I’m very proud of this team, they don’t know how big this really is, this team made history in DeKalb County,” said DCSD Executive Director Lenisera Bodison. “Never in school history has this team been region champions and they did that this year, that’s quite an accomplishment and they will be in the DeKalb history books for it.”

The Pirates’ season ended in the second round after falling to Lumpkin County 0-3 in the GHSA Class 3A state playoffs earlier this year.
