Student death caused by heart condition

A DeKalb County School District student died June 10 after collapsing on a school track during dance team training. The cause of death has recently been attributed to a heart condition, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Elyse Purefoy, 17, died from a heart defect not previously diagnosed, according to the findings from her autopsy. Purefoy’s death was caused by cardiac dysrhythmia, due to anomaly of the left coronary artery, according to Patrick Bailey, director of the Medical Examiner’s Office for DeKalb County. The Purefoy family was not aware of the student’s condition.  

Purefoy recently made Arabia Mountain High School’s dance team. As she participated in a summer workout with the team, she collapsed on the school’s track. The student was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Purefoy was a student at Arabia Mountain High School and would have been a senior this school year. According to family and friends of Purefoy, she enjoyed singing and working hard. She began cheering and dancing in the third grade.

The funeral of Elyse Purefoy, 17, was held June 17 at Saint Philip AME Church in Decatur. The Purefoy family held a vigil June 15 that was attended by family, friends and classmates.
