Summer camps are back, many offer in-person

After cancellation or moves to virtual formats of many summer camps last year, several camps are again offering in-person options for children.  

This year, many camps have COVID-19 safety protocols in place such as mask wearing and social distancing due to the pandemic still being active. For those looking for a program for their children, The Champion has compiled a list of some summer camps throughout DeKalb County.

City of Doraville summer camp

City of Doraville is hosting summer camp for children ages 5 to 12 from May 31 through July 30 at Forest Fleming Arena, 3037 Pleasant Valley Drive.

Camp will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is $125 weekly per child with a $25 sibling discount. Breakfast and lunch are included. To register visit Doraville.recdesk.com/community.

Tucker Recreation Department summer camp

Swimming, hiking, STEM projects, art projects, sports, nature programing, and games will be part of Tucker Parks and Recreation’s summer camp.

The camp will be held June 1 to July 30, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children ages 5 to 12 years; free before and after care is available from 7 until 9 a.m. and 4 until 6 p.m.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided during camp, which is $125 per child per week.

Free virtual summer camp hosted by DeKalb County Police Athletic League

Registration is now open for the second annual DeKalb County Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) Plus Unit Virtual Summer Academy. The free program, created for youth ages 5 through 14, will run June 7 to July 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The program is hosted by the P.A.L. unit and will include a variety of virtual experiences, including P.A.L. fitness, cheerleading, virtual gaming with a police officer, and a talent show.

DeKalb County “Camp Superstars” registration now open

DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs has opened registration for “Camp Superstars” summer camp program.

Camp Superstars, a summer day camp for ages 5 through 15, runs June 14 to July 30, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The camp fee is $66 per week, and breakfast and lunch are provided.

Park staff will meet camp participants outside recreation centers for curbside drop-off and pickup. Parents will not be allowed to enter the facility during operating hours. All campers will be temperature checked and must wear a mask while indoors.

Children who participate in Camp Superstars will experience a variety of activities, including swim lessons, arts and crafts, nature, sports, health and wellness clinics, team games and more. Registration is limited this year to create small groups and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Decatur’s Legacy Park to host various camps

Legacy Park will host sports, enrichment, and leadership camps. 

Camp for grades kindergarten through five runs from June 14-July 19; Enrichment “E Camp” for grades kindergarten through six from June 7 through July 9; and the Leaders-in-Training camp for ages 14 and 15 from June 7 to July 9 at a cost of $20 per week. A Junior Counselor Program and employment opportunity is available to 16 and 17-year-olds from June 7 through July 9. Mandatory orientation is June 7 through 10.

Brookhaven summer camps

Brookhaven Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities and programs. For information about any activities, call Philip at (404) 637-0512.

The camps include an art camp, chess camp, LEGO camp, etc., although not full day camps.
