Suspect in animal cruelty case in custody
DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) announced that Mekhi Jackson of Atlanta was taken into custody on March 18 for allegedly beating a dog to death.
Officials from DKPD stated that the incident “appears to have occurred” on March 12, near 2051 Flat Shoals Rd. in DeKalb. Jackson was recorded beating a dog in the stairwell of an apartment building by a neighbor’s front door camera.
DKPD has updated their initial reports to include information on the suspect and details stating that the dog has died.
“Unfortunately, the dog … in the animal cruelty video has been located deceased. We have identified the subject as Mekhi Jackson and are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him,” stated a news release from DKPD.
According to a 2022 report from Atlanta Journal Constitution, Jackson was also arrested in January 2022 in connection to an alleged drive-by shooting that occurred near McNair High School in south DeKalb.
Court records show that Jackson has been charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals for his alleged connection to the video. According to court records, Jackson was also charged with five felonies for his alleged role in the January 2022 shooting – including three counts of aggravated assault with a weapon.
