The legacy continues as phase II of Decatur’s Village at Legacy Park opens
Decatur Housing, the city of Decatur’s housing authority, recently announced that leasing has launched for Village at Legacy Phase II, the newest addition to what it describes as “one of Decatur’s most sought-after affordable housing communities.”
When the city of Decatur in 2017 acquired the property that had been the campus of United Methodists Children’s Home, city officials created a master plan for the site through what the city describes on its website as a “visionary process that spanned roughly eight months, launching with collective big picture dreaming, then fleshing out ideas in greater detail.”
The housing addendum to the master plan included a two-phase development designed to be affordable for families and individuals of modest means—the development that became Village at Legacy.
Decatur Housing said the new residential complex located on South Columbia Drive fits well in the Legacy Park community, which provides “a pleasant setting, a large community center, and green space…in a city that offers excellent education, employment opportunities, health services and recreational amenities.”
An 88-year-old organization, Decatur Housing states on its website, “Today, we are reimagining what housing means—focusing on attainable living options that support economic diversity and strengthen the social fabric of Decatur.”
Phase I of Village at Legacy Park is now fully occupied, Decatur Housing states, calling the high level of interest in the development “a testament to the overwhelming demand for quality, affordable homes in the city of Decatur.”
Decatur Housing said in its announcement that Village at Legacy Apartments offer “a rare combination of thoughtfully designed living spaces, community-centered amenities, and unbeatable Decatur access all at affordable price points that make quality of life attainable.”

“Phase I showed us what this community could be and the demand was undeniable. Phase II is an opportunity for more Decatur residents, including the next generation of professionals and career starters, to experience what affordable, quality living truly looks like” stated Decatur Housing President and CEO Larry Padilla.
“Phase II expands what Phase I proved: that affordable housing and quality living are not a trade-off,” states the Decatur Housing announcement. “Residents enjoy brand-new one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments and townhomes with modern finishes, including stone countertops, wood-style flooring, updated kitchens with stainless steel appliances, washer and dryer connections, and—in select units—private patios or balconies,” adding that free Wi-Fi is included in all units.
Like Phase I, Phase II has 66 units with a mixture of housing types that include duplexes and garden-style apartments.
The development, with units starting at $1,000 a month, was designed with families, entry-level professionals, and individuals launching their careers in mind, Decatur Housing stated, noting that such potential residents “deserve a quality, affordable home in a community built to support their ambitions.”
Community amenities include a coworking space, art room, classroom, clubhouse, community garden, on-site laundry facility, outdoor lounge, picnic area with barbecue grills, bike and hike trail access, and 24-hour emergency maintenance within a smoke-free environment, according to Decatur Housing.
“Village at Legacy is ideally positioned for those who want to live, work, and thrive in one of metro Atlanta’s most dynamic communities. With quick access to South Columbia Drive, East College Avenue, and I-285, every corner of the region is within reach,” the announcement continued.
The announcement pointed out that Village at Legacy is a short drive from major employers, including DeKalb County government, Emory Healthcare, Delta Air Lines, and Davis Manufacturing and within the City Schools of Decatur district, with close proximity to Agnes Scott College and Emory University. “For residents building their professional lives, the community’s coworking space, high-speed Wi-Fi, and central location provide a genuine competitive advantage,” it states.
Prospective residents may tour the community and meet the leasing team Mondays and Wednesdays 10 through 11 a.m. and 4 through 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
