Three cross country teams win state titles

Decatur boys’ cross country team made history Nov. 1 after winning its first state title in program history.

Decatur took home the Class AAAAA state title with a total time of 1:27:04.79, beating defending champion Starr’s Mill (1:28:43.55). St. Pius X boys and girls swept the Class AAAA state meet with the boys winning the title with a total time of 1:25:42.00, and the girls won with a total time of 1:38:07.24.

Sophomore Christian Gonzalez led the way for the Decatur Bulldogs, finishing third overall with a time of 16:24.37, giving Decatur its only top 10 finisher. Freshman Jake Westing (17:28.02), junior Eoin McNally (17:31.75) and junior Ethan Yankovich (17:37.92) finished 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively, to round out the top 20 finishers for Decatur.

St. Pius boys won its second consecutive state championship, eighth since 2010 and 11th overall with a total time of 1:25:42.00, beating runner-up Denmark (1:27:13.59). Senior Chad DeWitt led the Golden Lions with a third-place finish at 16:49.23, and junior Patrick McDonald (17:10.61) finished ninth overall.

St. Pius X boys won its second consecutive Class AAAA state championship.

Sophomore Ryan Boyle (17:11.96) finished 11th overall, senior Andrew Ryan (17:12.14) place 12th, junior Logan Wiley (17:18.06) finished 14th overall and sophomore Eamonn Kenah (17:23.99) placed 17th overall to round out the top 20 finishers for St. Pius.

St. Pius X (1:3807.24) girls won their fourth state title in program history, defeating runner-up Blessed Trinity (1:39:16.01) and defending champions Marist (1:38:29.62). St. Pius had three runners to finish in the top 10—senior Morgan Vaden (19:06.59) finished fourth, junior Catherine Breault (19:15.16) finished fifth and junior Mary Brady (19:15.90) finished seventh overall.

Druid Hills boys and girls finished in the top 10 of the Class AAAA team standings. The boys finished seventh overall with a time of 1:29:56.06 and the girls finished in eighth place with a time of 1:53:15.58. Marist boys finished in eighth place with a time of 1:29:37.09.

Chamblee boys finished ninth overall in the Class AAAAA team standings with a time a total time of 1:31:30.59. Clarkston (1:34:49.28) finished 18th and Southwest DeKalb (1:45:51) finished 31st overall in the Class AAAAA boys’ team standings.

Decatur girls (1:50:35.78) finished seventh overall, Chamblee girls (1:55:27.17) finished 14th overall and Clarkton girls (2:07:55.08) finished 24th overall.

In Class AAAAAA, M.L. King girls finished 24th overall with a time of 2:02:04.62 and the boys finished 28th overall with a time of 1:40:21.60.

In Class AAAAAAA, Lakeside girls (1:46:10.43) finished 11th overall and Lakeside boys (1:32:20.13) finished 20th overall. Paideia boys (1:29:46.48) finished third overall in the Class A-Private boys standings and the girls (1:49:44.92) finished sixth.
