Tucker race to honor veterans, fund new legion post

An event to raise money and honor local veterans, while also encouraging the community to get active, is scheduled for early November in Tucker.

Event organizers from the Joe Pritchett American Legion Post No. 207 announced that the second Annual Veterans Day 5K Walk/Run, which is also a 2025 Peachtree Road Race qualifier, is scheduled for Nov. 9, at 8 a.m. at Tucker High School, 5036 Lavista Road.

This event honors local veterans and “raises crucial funds to complete the construction of our new post building, which is a vital component in our mission to combat veteran suicide,” according to a news release.

In 2019, Post No. 207 burned daown, but post leaders have continued organizing events and supporting veterans in the area. Event organizers said every dollar raised during this event will go toward building a new post.

“Our post is dedicated to battling the alarming statistic of 22 veteran suicides a day, and opening our doors will empower us to fulfill our mission of Rescue, Restore, and Repay,” the news release states.

According to the most recent statewide statistics from VA.gov, 226 Georgia veterans committed suicide in 2021.

The news release states that American Legion officials focus on providing immediate support to veterans in need, helping veterans heal long term and giving back to the community that supports veterans.

The race is open to everyone in the community. Registration is now available at https://www.active.com/tucker-ga/running/distance-running-races/veterans-day-5k-walk-run-2024
