West defeats East in Junior All-Star Baseball Classic

The West Juniors held off the East Juniors 5-3 to win the 15th annual DeKalb County Junior All-Star Baseball Classic at Dunwoody High School on June 3.

The East team was coached by Southwest DeKalb’s Tyrus Taylor aided by his Southwest DeKalb assistant Ronnie Kendrick. Dunwoody’s Kyle Smith led the West coaching staff and was assisted by Druid Hills’ Andre Mastrogiacomo.

The West took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on five consecutive one-out hits started by Zach Pauling (Dunwoody) lining a shot up the middle. Sam Heetderks (Chamblee) followed with another into right field. Pauling scored on a wild pitch to put the West up 1-0.

A single by Andrew Fowler (Decatur) put runners at first and third for Jayden Mosely (Lakeside) who slid a ground ball into the gap between shortstop and third to score Heetderks for a 2-0 lead. Andwele Pittman (Decatur) hit one into left field to plate fowler to make it 3-0. East pitcher AJ Holloway (Redan) ended the inning with ground balls to limit the West’s damage to three runs.

Heetderks upped the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning with an RBI double into left-center field gap to score Joey David (Chamblee), who had walked to lead off the inning. East pitcher Kameron Scott (Southwest DeKalb) got a ground ball with runners on first and second and his defense turned a double play to end the West threat.

West pitcher Ryan Davies (Dunwoody) gave up a run on an RBI single to right field by Montagus Phillips (Southwest DeKalb) in the top of the fourth as the East got on the scoreboard. Jihad Guy (Lakeside) made a big throw from right field to third on the hit by Phillips to cut down Daejon Jones (Southwest DeKalb), who was trying to move from first to third on the hit, to end the inning.

A pair of errors added a run for the West in the bottom of the fourth as Pittman walked, stole second, and scored to give the west a 5-1 cushion heading into the sixth.

Scott walked and stole second and third to set up a sacrifice fly by Alec Waller (Tucker) to cut the lead to 5-2. Robert Robinson’s (Tucker) groundout plated Matthew Evans (Redan) to make the final score 5-3 as Alex Balsamo (Druid Hills) closed out the game.

Phillips was named the East MVP after picking up two hits, one a double, and an RBI. He also held the West at bay for two innings allowing just one hit, a walk, and no runs on the mound. Balsamo picked up the West MVP after sitting down five of the six East batters over 1 2/3s innings. He allowed just one hit, no runs, and struck out one.
