Woman fatally shot over dog dispute

A young woman is dead following an ongoing dispute over aggressive dogs.

DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said officers from the East Precinct received a call around 8:15 a.m. June 28 of a woman shot at an apartment complex near the Mall of Stonecrest. Officers found a woman in her 20s with a gunshot wound to her chest.

The victim died on the scene.

“The female victim got into a physical altercation with her neighbor, a 28-year-old woman,” Campbell said. “They have been having an ongoing dispute over their dogs. There were complaints of aggression between the dogs and it escalated to the physical altercation. The 28-year-old female, during the physical altercation, shot the victim.”

Campbell said the altercation happened in a hallway of the apartment complex. Both women were outside at the same time and one of the women had their dog with them.

“They both were having issues [with the dogs],” Campbell said. “I don’t know if one dog was the aggressor, but there was an argument that had been ongoing between the two women about aggression between the two dogs.”

Campbell said the 28-year-old woman has been detained and is currently at police headquarters being interviewed by detectives.

Officials are trying to get confirmation on the victim’s age and her name has not been released.
