100 Black Men of DeKalb launch Victory and Values

100 Black Men of DeKalb County launched a youth development program for ages 14-18 that organizers said blends athletics and mentorship while creating pathways for long-term academic and personal success.

Known as the Victory and Values Initiative, organizers stated the program was designed to give students more than just activities; it was built to create structured pathways for growth through a combination of athletic exposure, mentorship from community leaders and professionals, and access to educational opportunities in STEM and career development fields. The initiative reflects the organization’s long-standing mission of preparing young people to succeed academically, socially, and professionally while building strong character and leadership habits early in life, according to officials.

“Sports play central roles in the program as the initiative uses athletics as a vehicle for character development,” according to organization officials. “Rather than focusing only on competition, sports are used as a teaching tool for teamwork, perseverance accountability, and leadership.”

The initiative received significant attention when former NBA player and Basketball Hall of Fame nominee Terry Cummings became an honorary member of the organization. His induction helped launch the Victory and Values Initiative and expand youth access to mentors from professional sports and STEM fields, according to a news release.

NASCAR racer Lavar Scott also became an honorary member of the organization to help the launch of the program. Together, he and Cummings launched one of the initiative’s first major activities known as “Day at NASCAR.” The activity sent more than 75 children to EchoPark Speedway—formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway—where they received behind-the-scenes access and participated in discussions with motorsports professionals and athletes.

“This is about more than sports,” stated Cummings during his induction. “It’s about using the platform of athletics to teach life lessons, create access, and build the next generation of leaders.”
