25 DeKalb schools on support lists after GDOE assessment updates

DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has a number of schools needing state support from Georgia Department of Education (GDOE), according to a Dec. 12 update to GDOE’s Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) and Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) lists.

The update states that 25 DCSD schools meet the entrance criteria for state support, while nine DCSD schools were removed from the lists.

The lists identify schools that are performing in the bottom 5 to 10 percent statewide in at least one category and schools that have a four-year graduation rate of less than or equal to 67 percent.
Schools on the CSI lists—which measure graduation rates and the state’s College and Career Ready Performance Index—are DeKalb Alternative School, Elizabeth Andrews High School, Fairington Elementary School, Flat Shoals Elementary School, McNair Discovery Learning, Stone Mountain Elementary School, Panola Way Elementary School, Cross Keys High School, and McNair High School.

Schools on the TSI lists—which measure schools with specific subgroup of students performing in the lowest 5 percent of the state—are Pine Ridge Elementary School, Salem Middle School, Woodridge Elementary School, and Shadow Rock Elementary School.

The GDOE also has a separate list for Title I schools performing in the lowest 5.01 percent to 10 percent range of the College and Career Ready Performance Index. Flat Rock Elementary School, Mary McLeod Bethune Middle School, McNair Middle School, Peachcrest Elementary School, Snapfinger Elementary School, and Stoneview Elementary School were still listed as Promise Schools.

Browns Mill, Dresden, Montclair, Oak View, and Stone Mill elementary schools were added to the Promise list, in addition to Towers High School.

“This state listing identifies schools that will require and receive a more prescriptive approach towards daily support and does not indicate that these schools are not making progress,” said Interim Superintendent Vasanne Tinsley. “This laser-focused effort will help with positive engagement and academic growth in students as we remove schools from the state-identified listing.”

A DCSD spokesperson said the district supports improvement efforts of its state-identified schools through Regional Superintendent Offices, the Office of School Improvement, and all divisions within the district. Support includes site-based work that focuses on the following areas: data analysis and interpretation, improving instruction, increasing graduation rates, and providing site-specific and district-initiated professional learning.

GDOE and the Metro Regional Educational Service Agency work alongside DCSD to provide supplemental site-based support to schools identified as CSI and CSI Graduation Rate schools, according to a news release. GDOE also provides school improvement funding for all state-identified schools regardless of designation type.

Additionally, nine DCSD schools were removed from the state lists on Dec. 12.

DCSD officials said the four schools removed from the CSIs list are:
• Miller Grove Middle School
• Murphey Candler Elementary School
• Redan Elementary School
• Toney Elementary school

The five schools removed from the TSI list are:
• Allgood Elementary School
• Marbut Elementary School
• Museum School Avondale Estates
• Rowland Elementary School
• Tucker High School

“I would like to congratulate the nine schools that have met CSI and TSI exit criteria,” said Tinsley. “Thank you for your hard work and commitment to improving the education for our students and your school communities.”
In total, GDOE identified 175 schools on the lists for the 2022-23 school year and removed 57 schools.
