Cityhood may be dead in DeKalb, at least for this year
With only three days left in the legislative session and three proposed areas vying for cityhood, the House Governmental Affairs Committee tabled any vote on new municipalities March 12.
The proposed cities of Briarcliff, Lakeside and Tucker all appeared before the committee in the past two weeks.
For the past year, the cityhood debate has been one of contention at times, with each proposed city refusing to give up certain areas within their boundaries. At times, some proponents of cityhood were accused of cherry-picking, others of playing partisan politics to the detriment of DeKalb County.
It appears now, that unless one of the proposed bills is quickly reported favorably out of committee at the last minute, there will be no new cities in DeKalb County this year.
Rep. Scott Holcomb, who attended the committee meeting, said it tabled the bill with a vote of 8-7.
“It is highly unlikely that any cityhood bill for unincorporated DeKalb will pass this year,” Holcomb said. “I know many of you will be disappointed by this news, especially those of you who worked so hard on the various initiatives.”

Don’t count anything out, yet. Millar dropped the bomb on Tucker last year at the last second so that we didn’t have time to think straight, much less look at all our options. This is more likely a strategy than it is a defeat. Stay alert, Tucker residents, especially if you don’t live on the same street as all the Tucker 2014 board members! They only represent a slim number of residents with heavy political ties to just one party.
And where are the “On the Take” DeKalb County Police at ? They sure are not patrolling our streets. I called the DeKalb 911 call center yesterday 3/11 for an hour trying to get a police out to stop speeding and reckless motorcycles from racing up and down our streets = THE POLICE NEVER RESPONDED !!!
Spoke to Interim CEO Lee May’s office today about the problem = been doing that for ten years = ten years and still no Police Partrols in Gresham Park just like the rest of the County ? Where are the police at because they sure are not patrolling our neighborhoods ?
And what about all the illegal gambling in these seedy bars and conveince stores all about East and South DeKalb many also adrift in a sea of drugs and prositution with The DeKalb County Police Dept working the front door ?
Interim CEO Lee May along with Commissioners Johnson and Gannon know that these thing are going on and they all ignore the problem making all of the Metro Atlanta Area Unsafe !
US District Attorney Sally Q Yates continues to stand idle by while crime in DeKalb Flourishes = It appears that the US Attorney and the Local Office of the FBI are on the Gamblers Payroll also ?
