Emory names new athletic director

Emory University named Mattie White as the new Clyde Partin Sr. director of athletics and recreation beginning Sept. 21.

Emory officials state that in her new role, White will be responsible for providing a clear vision and strategic oversight for the Athletics Department and the Recreation and Wellness Department. That includes overseeing 19 varsity athletics teams, 29 club sports programs, and recreational facilities which collectively serve more than 15,000 students.

The Ohio native holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in education from Ohio University. She earned a master’s degree in athletic administration and counselor education before completing a Ph,D. in health behavior from Indiana University where she also served as athletic deputy director.

Before landing in the eagle’s nest, White served most recently as deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator for the University of Delaware. During her time at the institution, she oversaw facilities, event operations, compliance and equipment operations. She also led the sport administration team, serving as the primary sport administrator for men’s basketball, women’s basketball and softball.

White brings more than two decades of intercollegiate athletics experience leading athletic departments through strategic planning and operational excellence. Throughout her career, White has championed academic achievement, leadership development, community engagement and athletic participation as interconnected components of the student experience, according to Emory officials.

White succeeds Price Carter, who was appointed vice president for student engagement and dean of campus life at Emory earlier this summer.

“Mattie brings tremendous student-centered energy and enthusiasm to work,” said Carter. “She is a tested leader who supports her coaches and teams with experience taking storied athletics programs and driving them to the next level.”

“I am deeply honored and excited to join the Emory community,” stated White. “From the moment I arrived on campus, I was impressed by the exceptional and supportive culture between the coaches, staff and student-athletes. Emory is a special place for competitive excellence, academic and personal development, and well-being. I look forward to working collaboratively with the incredible team to elevate the student experience and expand Eagle pride.”

Emory Athletics has seen success over the years competing at the NCAA Division III level. The university has won a total of 35 Division III national championships with the most recent accomplishments coming from the women’s golf team claiming this year’s national title and the men’s basketball team earning runner-up in the Division III NCAA Tournament.
